Death jazz psychonauts…

I like Meshuggah a lot, so it came almost natural to dig the creature invented by Meshuggah's lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal. In the project called Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects the incredible technical textures of Meshuggah are blended with jazz while a demonic, reptilian voice accompanies you through the crazy, puzzle-like development of sound.
Amazing!
I’m posting the re-edition of Sol Niger Within, the 1997 only album done in 1999 (the so-called version 3.33). I know that this edition is a bit different from and is missing something of the original one, in spite of bonus tracks, but I don’t have the pristine 1997 edition.
Enjoyable anyway …

SUMMER!

summer is officially here now [at least in the US, where we officially usher in the season by honoring our fallen soldiers, and by 'honoring our fallen soldiers' i mean we all grill a lot of meat and drink enormously.] i'm sunburnt and still mildly hungover so i consider this memorial day weekend a success. hope yours was too.

with no segue at all, here's some music.

most of you probably have this already; but just in case, right? i forgot it was coming out until i read the list of upcoming june releases on invisible orange today and went 'oh shit' and downloaded it.

this is a fantastic summer album. yes, they sang 'lovefool' and died immediately after but this band, i think, is completely underrated. first song is A+ to set as an mp3 alarm in the morning, and their cover of iron man is stellar.

I like my dose of death metal …

I know I’m a bit monotonous with the posts here, in spite of the fact that I actually like many genres of metal. But there's so much good stuff, old and new stuff, on death metal that I can’t refrain from posting some of it!
Well, I guess it’s early to give a judgment about what the best death metal release of 2010 will be.
In this light my brother Huansoahn recently posted a superb album, the one about the Swedish band The Grotesquery, the newest creature of Rogga Johansson and Johan Berglund (Paganizer, Edge of Sanity, Demiurg, Those Who Bring The Torture, the finest doom act The 11th Hour, etc.).
I’m "replying" to Huasoahn with the newest release by another Swedish death metal band, this time a long-lived one (active since the 90's), Nominon.
Their last, killer effort, Monumentomb, is out on label Deathgasm, together with their split with the US band Sathanas (limited edition – check on myspace).

Like in their previous awesome releases (Terra Necrosis, Recremation), they keep on with their purest old-school death metal, aggressive riffs with some razor-like accelerations reminding me either Bloodbath in their death’n’rollish moments or else fierce Slayer style. Excellent vocal parts have Henke Skoog’s deep growls sometimes coupled with background blackish screams, which increase the sense of dark and filth and hatred. That bit of melody here and there doesn’t diminish the impact of this metal slab ...

Proudly back from the past …

They contributed to build up the mythical Swedish death metal panorama in the late 80s-early 90s and then sort of disappeared. They are back and will be feeding the lively death metal flame in the Death Fest in Baltimore next May.
Nirvana 2002, a.k.a. N2002, formed in Edsbyn (Sweden) in 1988 originally as Prophet 2002 (name of an old analog synthetizer) then as Nirvana, and eventually as Nirvana 2002.
Last year they released a fat compilation of their 1989-1991 production through Relapse Records.
This album is in perfect line and timing with the release of the excellent opus (book plus CD collection) by Daniel Ekeroth on the old school Swedish death metal. Shame on you if you don’t have a copy of Daniel Ekeroth’s stuff ...

Btw, fortunately (for me), no photos of the metallers on the cover … :-)

Some deadly pills …

There are some very recent death metal releases which hooked my attention. They are from relatively new bands and the releases are EPs or demos, so I’m posting them together.
One of the objects posted here is by Feral, a fine death metal combo from Skellefteå, Sweden.
The other one is from the death/black band Lvcifyre from London (UK).
A third one is from the “occult death metal” band Grave Miasma from London as well.

Feral play some nice, bold, groovy death metal with very catchy and “mischievous”, death’n’rollish rhythms, like “listening to Cannibal Corpse on the Toys' N’Rus”, as a reviewer wrote on a Swedish webzine. And the growled vocals, by vocalis Hook, are excellent: deep and nasty but even I can understand what he sings about (well, almost ...). I’m posting their second EP.
Lvcifyre include two members of the UK-based black/death band Adorior. What I’m posting is their debut EP, containing two tracks drenched of pure evil, dark and unpolished death metal.
Grave Miasma, formerly named as Goat Molestör, share the drummer with Adorior. Terrorizer magazine wrote about them that “they sup greedily from the bloody chalice of Incantation and Sarcofago, staying true to the old school even as their own ritual poison seeps through”. I don’t need to add more …

A deadly whirlwind …

Some more death metal that I like.
The band is called Son of Earth and comes from, guess, Sweden.
I didn’t find much info on this band, whose only website appears to basically be the CD shop/label's website. And this should be their debut album, Son of Earth (2009).
Anyhow, they absolutely rip!
On their website they write: “This is Only REAL Death Metal made where the darkness borns : S W E D E N totally into the old fuckin' days, we can describe this shit as very old Pestilence, Macabre End, Massacra adding some Autopsy passages... We no need Original / Virtuose touches, We only need the real feeling that make us grew up!”
Well, they are fucking right!

Depression

Dekadens, new great stuff from the Swedish depressive (black) metal band Lifelover.

“The music is urgent and brisk in a dark, hellish kind of way. The Lifelover style is very distinctive: clean-cut smart riffs with even the black metal elements that do appear (not very much) sounding sharp and clean at their supposedly buzziest, medium-fast rhythms, piano melodies that often run counter to the rest of the music and interludes of field recordings or ambience when you least expect them.” (from metal-archives.com)
“Lifelover delivers a very bleak view of modern urban life and relationships in Sweden and its effect on human psychology.”
It’s funny to see the amount of incredibly aggressive and desperate music produced by Scandinavia, right when Scandinavia is indicated as one of the areas in the world where the quality of life is highest …
There must be something weird with statistics ...
Anyway, this new stuff by Lifelover is great, and that’s enough for the moment.

Something “melodic” …

I basically like everything that is either touched or done or produced by the two Swedish death metal gurus Dan Swanö and Peter Peter Tägtgren.
This is the turn of Peter Tägtgren and of the return of his creature Hypocrisy, tagged as “melodic death metal band”, with the new 2009 album (leaked). The more I listen to it the more I find it awesome.
This is my ideal of “melodic” death metal …

Space Doom from Uppsala.

This band comes from Uppsala, Sweden. They take inspiration from many bands including High on Fire, Uffomamut & Om; as well as their previous bands which ranged from death metal and post-rock, to Jean Michel Jarre style synthesizer masturbation and potent rökish.
