Abrasive.

Årabrot is named after a garbage dump off the west coast of Norway. The first two Årabrot albums and their e.p. were produced by Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis, Sleep). The third full length was produced by Steve Albini. Their sound has been compared to Birthday Party-era Nick Cave, Ministry, & Captain Beefheart. If Am. Rep. had a "black metal department" they would be at the top.

Strange.

The Belgians that brought you the MASS series are back with a new Ep. In their absence it seems they have become enamored with performance art and the like and decided out of disillusion, sincerity, or fashion to indulge in acoustic music.

Substantial.

New release from one of the most consistent, obscure, exceptionally self-perpetuating and humble labels currently out there. Please support the band & label, buy some merchandise. Music is tactfully complex, and articulately adroit.

Bleak.

Some trembled in anticipation of this album. Others with curiosity. Select few will pridefully bash. Most will foolishly disregard.

Weigh the most hyped follow-up of the year to the most consistent label of the year, add some vehement skepticism, and top off with Colin Marston's persistence.

BELPHEGOR - WALPURGIS RITES: HEXENWAHN

here is the latest album from the austrian blackened death metal band, belphegor.

instead of writing some ballswinging crap about this band and the album, i'm going to copy and paste a single Q&A from an interview i found online.

Your music always involves a lot of sexual imagery. Where does sex, for you, fit into death metal?

Fuck yeah, of course. It fits perfectly. Musick, sex, and Sathan, you know? We are totally into it, and it is Belphegor to the highest.

Dark.

This is dark as it is mellow. This is sensual as it is savage. This is textural as it is indifferent. This description is useless as it is compulsory. Bands' third release with the moniker, fifth in the series. Also included some bonuses.

Paganism.

Discounting the suspect imagery [which is fiercely defended here], this bands' ultimate focus is its' music. This music is produced by Negură Music which is revered by many. The band claims inspiration from nature, ancient Britain, and paganism while the music claims roots in equally disparate places, which might be a result of the members' eclectic histories.

Aesthetics.

Visual aesthetics play an equal part to auditory aesthetics for this band. Contextualizing those aesthetics is a problem for many. The band comes from Australia, has an obsession with abstract horror, cthulhu mythos, bizarre costumes, and dissonant death metal.

Dense.

New branding, same antics. A slight return to the old with the same drawn out dense touches of the new. Yet again more EP's, less "complete" full-lengths. Mastered by John Golden - limited edition LP of 2000 comes out the 25th of this month.

Conflicting Ingredients.

This bands' history is extensive. This bands' history is sordid. They have released at least 16 albums to date, ranging in style, record label, moniker, and line-up [ one of the albums was released as a "double trio" ]. One of the members went on to play with Rival Schools, while the front-man now also plays in Ascend and Eagle Twin. Not for the faint of ear.

Space Doom from Uppsala.

This band comes from Uppsala, Sweden. They take inspiration from many bands including High on Fire, Uffomamut & Om; as well as their previous bands which ranged from death metal and post-rock, to Jean Michel Jarre style synthesizer masturbation and potent rökish.
