OUROBOROS / KALON

these two albums were submitted by loyal reader adam/desklazer; they are both his bands.

KALON - DARK SKY, BRIGHT SUN.

adam says:
This is my art/math/space rock band. We are instrumental, with two guitars, bass, drums, and cello. You may also hear other instruments such as zithers, tabla, harp, and sitar throughout our compositions. This album came out in 2006, and is kind of a picture of what we used to sound like. We're recording our second LP right now and hope to have it out before the year ends. Lots of odd time signatures, delay pedal feedback/decay, and chunky guitars throughout with some peaceful moments interspersed. We get compared a lot to Dredg, Tool, GY!BE, Mogwai, Don Caballero, and Pink Floyd. Whether that's founded or not is up to you, the listener. We just added a viola player so we're going to be writing for dual strings soon.

jaci says:
it's hard to say anything groundbreaking because adam covered most of what you'd need to know in the band description, but after listening to most of this album i know i'd listen again. it's really lovely...smooth as the songs progress, and the variety of intriguing instruments makes this album an enticing listen. the strings in the track 'twilight pathways of memory' were a favorite. it's really, really nice to hear a band that has actual stringed instruments rather than hitting chords on a keyboard and trying and failing to sound epic.
saying the band sounds like GY!BE and tool [at times, anyway] is right fucking on. it's is hard to classify them as one genre [and really, who gives a shit about that anyway?] and it's refreshing. recommended.

OUROBOROS - HEIR TO THE THRONE EP.

adam says:
This is a doom metal band formed by me and my roommate. It was done for a "recording contest." Basically, you had to have a band record an album in a short period of time [I think we had like 2 weeks to put something together]. We ended up as one of the three finalists, and got to play a show with a pretty popular local Pittsburgh rock band, The Modey Lemon. We didn't win, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. Anyways, this is heavy SunnO)))/Earth worship with some sped-up Sabbath goodness towards the end. It was fun for a one-off, hard to say if we'll keep going. This is just guitars and bass droning and should be listened to at the maximum possible volume. Drone fans will probably find something to like about this one.

jaci says:
this is exactly what it says it is: first song is old sunnO))) worship, minus the weirdo with the laser fingers and the fancy guitar that mr. o'malley has. second song is a little faster, more structured, sabbath-y riffage with some vocals. at first it's weird to think about those two types of music being adjacent in one band but when you think about it, drone is like if you took a sabbath song with a sweet riff [a national acrobat, anybody?] and just stretched it out til it was about a year long. its like abstract. i think i've got too much art history under my belt and i'm trying to liken music to the progression of art movements. this isn't working too well. gonna quit while i'm kind of ahead.
